Yes! 舡 Douglass resolves never again to be beaten by Covey, or anyone else, without a fight. 舡 By framing the sentence in this way, Douglass uses the diagonal turn of phrase that we saw in his previous descriptions of Auld and Gore (for example, 舠just the man for such a place, just the place for such a man舡): a strategy of Latin and Greek speeches called chiasmus, a verbal crisscrossing in which the order of words in the first clause of a sentence is inverted in the second. ( John F. 舡) I linger on chiasmus because this figure of speech, this verbal reversal, is important to the structure and meaning of Douglass舗s whole book, and to the meaning of Douglass舗s reversal of fortunes, his turning of the tables on his trickster-adversaries.

He was a stranger to nearly every member of that body; but, having recently made his escape from the southern prison-house of bondage,1 and feeling his curiosity excited to ascertain the principles and measures of the abolitionists,舒of whom he had heard a somewhat vague description while he was a slave,舒he was induced to give his attendance, on the occasion alluded to, though at that time a resident in New Bedford.

He campaigns for Abraham Lincoln, who is elected president in November. 1861 The Civil War begins. Douglass is a vocal proponent of the right of blacks to enlist and an aggressive propagandist for the Union cause. 1863 On January 1 President Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in Confederate areas not held by Union troops. The first black regiment, the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteers, is assembled. Two of Douglass舗s sons, Lewis and Charles, are among the recruits.
