Instead we are encouraged to adopt the attitude the Traveller requests from his fellow Victorians. Take it as a lie - or a prophecy. Say I dreamed it in the workshop. Consider I have been speculating upon the destinies of our race, until I have hatched this fiction. Treat 42 H. G. Wells my assertion of its truth as a mere stroke of art to enhance its interest. And taking it as a story, what do you think of it? (Ch. 16) The challenge draws attention to the playful quality of all Wells's earlier fiction, which makes its primary appeal as entertainment and resists over-literal interpretation.
It was in direct response to this view that another great Victorian championed the study of literature as part of the curriculum. According to Matthew Arnold, the best that had been thought and said in the world would supply a humane perspective to complement scientific knowledge. Whether Wells was much influenced by Arnold is open to doubt (though he would later voice a wish to 'correct the estrangement between knowledge and beauty', echoing Arnold's wish 'to establish a relation between the new conceptions, and our instinct for beauty'6).
As a spontaneous land-socialist, he loses his temper with a bullying landowner, thrashes him with his own whip and leaves him for dead. At the end of the book a housemaid whom, to the horror of her 'superiors,' the Angel has treated as an equal, throws herself into a fire at the vicarage to salvage his violin. Roused from his disillusionment by the example of her love, the Angel follows her and the couple are consumed or, in an ambiguous image of liberation and defeat, translated to the Land of Dreams.
