At the end of the book a housemaid whom, to the horror of her 'superiors,' the Angel has treated as an equal, throws herself into a fire at the vicarage to salvage his violin. Roused from his disillusionment by the example of her love, the Angel follows her and the couple are consumed or, in an ambiguous image of liberation and defeat, translated to the Land of Dreams.
