Language as a means of communication and social behavioral system, emphasizing pragmatic development as central to both L1 and L2 acquisition and overall language/human development. Topics approached from these perspectives include the role of caregiver’s speech in early language development, literacy acquisition, and acquisition of writing skills. Closely related to L1 and L2 acquisition/development are studies of bilingualism/multilingualism and the teaching and learning of foreign languages, including Japanese as a second language, where topics discussed include cross-lingual transfer from L1 to L2, learning errors, and proficiency assessment of second language acquisition.
