Note that this form of threat to validity inherent in the assessment process is present in all research that employs reactive assessment techniques. In other words, in science it is often impossible to study a phenomenon without fundamentally altering it. The characteristics of research settings and stimuli can also threaten external validity. A laboratory environment is often dramatically different from the real world. Hence, the results of treatment manipulations performed in lab settings may not translate to other settings.

Because clients from the treatment condition spent additional time in treatment with a therapist, relative to the control condition clients, there might have been greater opportunity to address personal concerns. If so, the greater attention paid toward the treatment condition clients is confounded with the treatment variable. As such, the effects of the novel treatment and the additional time in treatment afforded to treatment condition clients cannot be fully separated. Treatment implementation In the transition from the conceptual to the operational definition of a treatment or intervention, researchers must make decisions regarding how the treatment is to be executed for the purposes of a study.

Accordingly, the reaction to the pretest can be independently evaluated. Although the Solomon four-group design suffers from the same threats to internal validity as the pretest–posttest control-group design, the Solomon design is more externally valid, or generalizable (see section on external validity), to populations that will not experience any pretest. See Braver and Braver (1988) for an overview on analyzing data from a Solomon design. External validity External validity refers to the generalizability of the research findings (Campbell and Stanley, 1963).
