But she is silently warm to Celia, Mr Brooke tells her that 'Rome has agreed' with her, and Dorothea, questioned by Celia, begins her con- 28 cealment about her honeymoon. Celia's news, that she is engaged to Sir James, outweighs all else, Dorothea responding cautiously (conditioned by her own marriage experiences) then warmly to her sister who regards 'Mr Casaubon's learning as a kind of damp which might in due time saturate a neighbouring body'. We note the image and the half-conscious insight of Celia.

They are compared to 'two flowers which had opened then and there', while Dorothea feels as if there is 'fresh water at her thirsty lips to speak without fear'. She reveals to Will her deep-rooted need to serve someone 'who did great works'. Will's hyperbolical reactions continue and he thinks of 'beautiful lips kissing holy skulls and other emptinesses ecclesiastically 33 enshrined'. The imagery continues to distance him from reality. But he moves Dorothea more deeply than he is aware of, and reveals details of his early life of suffering which calls forth her sympathy and idealism.

Angry at first, she later responds warmly to him and, later still, gives the money she has saved to her father. Fred is taken ill, and Lydgate succeeds Wrench as the Vincys' medic~ attendant. This places him much in Rosamond's company, but no word is said, and he continues to care for Fred. Meanwhile the Casaubons return from their honeymoon to find that Celia is engaged to Sir James Chettam. Casaubon receives a letter from Will suggesting a visit, with one enclosed for Dorothea, but is taken ill, and Lydgate is called in.
