God is revealed to humans through the material. If the assertions regarding Christ’s divine authority seem audacious, the Anabaptist insistence that God is made known to human beings in a material form is equally striking. Some modern Christians have tended to think about their faith in a highly intellectual way, turning Christ into a concept or principle. Others focus on emotions or feelings, thereby making Christ into a spiritual abstraction. These emphases can easily lead to an understanding of Jesus that is fundamentally disconnected from the material world.

And God called it good! The creation story in the first three chapters of Genesis also suggests that part of the goodness of creation was God’s intention for humans to live in complete trust and intimacy and harmony—not only with God, but also with each other and with nature itself. Yet, as we know all too well, that harmony was quickly disrupted. Christians have sometimes been inclined to associate sin with the material world, especially the body. They have been tempted to link all “things of the flesh”—for example, the human inclination to be “fleshly minded” rather than “spiritually minded”—with the fall.

We sometimes talk enthusiastically about the “global village”— how modern communication allows people all over the world to be in instant conversation with each other. But in a mass culture, the language of village is misleading. Villagers, after all, truly know each other, including the particular gifts and eccentric habits of each individual. Villagers share memories that extend over generations. If mass culture honors efficiency and technical skills, village culture honors relationships and wisdom.
