Granted, most of us have yet to see our computers erase our bank accounts on purpose or kill us by manipulating our home’s thermostat, but thanks to a variety of sci-fi films where the main nemesis can get to us using just ones and zeroes, it’s easy to see why we might want to be wary the next time we try to force quit something on our laptops. My first interaction with deadly computers happened when as a kid I watched War Games (1983). Back then hackers were a novelty. In fact, Matthew Broderick’s character made being a hacker look more loveable than dangerous after changing the failing grades of a girl he liked at school – which almost got me expelled from school when I tried to replicate the manoeuvre.

My favourite Pluto story is Clifford D Simak’s “Construction Shack”, where the mini-world turns out to be just that. These reveal to awestruck human visitors that there was supposed to be another planet between Mars and Jupiter, but something went wrong (Rising damp? Insecure foundations? ) and it ended up as a mess of little asteroids. 6 billion years. David Langford dimly remembers that in animated cartoons, Pluto was the implacable nemesis of Bopeye.
