Since divination and dreams, on the other hand, derive from Powers emanating from the heavenly bodies in the manner previously mentioned' and since that which emanates from them in the imagination and thought does not falways] lead to human happiness but sometimes leads to the opposite, this'' kind of communication does not lessentiallyl lead to human happiness. Furthermore, since it is the material intellect that receives prophetic illumination, such communication is consequent upon the perfection of the intellecf and thus comes only after study.
Since this production of images requires effort, except if it occurs by chance, and since such effort occurs only while awake, it is necessary that the acquisition of the prirnarv premises needed for theoretical knowleclge usually occurs during the waking state. With respect to the secondary principles, it is clear that the material intellect must reproduce the primary premises from which these cognitions are derived. This reproduction usually recluires effort, rvhich cannot occur in sleep, since at that time the mental faculties have no choice in their operations.
But this is contrary to our hypothesis that the receiving faculties in divination and prophecy are distinct! Alter the conditional proposition assumcd above has been established, Gersonides can proceed to use it as a maior premise in his argument that it is indeed the case that the agents in these two kinds ofcommunication are different.
