The short series of David-Psalms 108-110 with its associated hymnic appendix: Pss. 11 i-i 14; 116-118. What are left are a number of stray texts which are difficult to fit into the wider structure, like 90, the psalm of Moses; 91 (LXX David); (94); 100; 101 (David); 102; 103 (David); 104; 115 . . etc. Most of these will have been independent pieces which were accommodated in the last part of the 'Wisdom Psalter' at a fairly late stage. 4. The Purpose of the Collection Taking an over-view, then, the Psalter is made up of the following parts: i.

I; 119) which are important because of their position. If we assume that the Psalter expanded from beginning to end, and that the groupings nearest the beginning are also the oldest, it can easily be seen how the character of the whole collection has changed. If the oldest sections are the most substantial ones, the collections of prayers of David, it would be a mistake to conclude that the meaning and purpose of the compilation was to offer prayers or songs for individual supplicants or worshippers, in order to allow ordinary people to take part in a service of worship using the prescribed formulae.

5) The second Davidic Psalter, 51-72, clearly had a more turbulent history. It grew up independently of the first, and apparently existed separately to begin with. This is seen in the duplication of material: 14=53; 4°>I3~I7 = 7°- The postscript to 72,70, 'Here end the prayers (fpillot) of David son of Jesse', brings out two points: firstly, that the group beginning at 51 came to a definite end at 72; and secondly, that the texts gathered here are to be seen as 'prayers', a definition which is 19 INTRODUCING THE PSALMS not confirmed in the Greek tradition, but instead is deliberately corrected to VJJLVOI, 'hymns'.
