The most obvious candidate for such an indicator is 14:46 – 51, and indeed, many scholars have regarded these verses as clearly demarcating the end of a section. ¹⁰³ If this observation is correct, 14:52 or 15:1 will be the strongest candidate for the beginning, since the next summary appears only in 2Sam 8:16–18. However, the formal indicator  4QSamA has only 15:20–21,24–32; 17:3–8, with a demarcating space after 15:31, while 4QSamB has 1Sam 15:16–18; 16:1–11, with demarcating spaces after 15:16 and 16:10–11.

With further specification, the evidence is too little to suggest any significant information about the author’s stylistic features, and even less about the source division. Even if we accept the consultation motif as a distinguishing feature, it is difficult to settle for 2Sam 5:25 as the ending, because a different conclusion is reached if another stylistic feature is considered. According to the criterion of the quasi-prophetic utterances of unexpected characters about David’s future kingship, the ending should be found much earlier than 2Sam 5.

And the promise of “cutting off (‫ ”)כרת‬David’s enemies, repeatedly mentioned in the HDR, especially in 1Sam 20:15 and 25:16, is said to be fulfilled in vv. ⁸³ It seems obvious that the other parts of the HDR are well connected with this chapter, and the ending should be found at least at the end of Nathan’s oracle in 7:17. However, the provenance of verses 8–11a is not clear, and some think that they are from the Deuteronomist. For instance, Dennis McCarthy notes that the  Albrecht Alt, “Zu II Samuel 8:1,” ZAW 13 (1936): 149 – 152 (150 – 151).
