The Rule] of War" in line 1, based on the letters lamed and mem legible at the top of the scroll, read by neither Yadin nor Flusser. Thanks are due to Prof. Frank Cross for suggesting this reconstruction. The English translation is largely based on Geza Vermes, The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English (Harmondsworth: Penguin Books, 1998) 163, with minor emendations. " Dimant questioned Flussers disregard of the similarity between the account at the beginning of the War Scroll and the historical events, that is, his failure to identify "the king of the Kittim" with Antiochus IV.
Menachem Kister, however, rejects the commonly held view, claiming that the ram should be identified with a leader of the Qumran community; see M. Kister, "Concerning the History of the Essenes," Tarbiz 56 (1987) 1-18 (Hebrew). For the moment, he is the only dissenter. While numerous fragments of Enoch were found at Qumran, no fragments of the Animal Apoca lypse referring to the large-horned ram have been found.
