By S. Vilminot, R. Nass, H. Schmidt

Eurogel '91 is the second one convention to document at the advancements in learn and expertise of eu laboratories and undefined. the quantity specializes in the clinical and technological development within the box, in addition to offering a world review of the most recent advancements. The fifty offered papers document on many new topics and examine teams. growth within the usage of the sol-gel procedure for brand spanking new items and methods is constructing gradually. program calls for an interdisciplinary attempt starting with software oriented primary learn and finishing up with engineering and know-how. This interdisciplinary touch could be more desirable through nearer cooperation among examine and undefined. specifically, strength clients of leading edge fabrics should still turn into extra conscious of the probabilities attached with sol-gel applied sciences. at the moment the sol-gel method is taken into account as essentially the most very important applied sciences for constructing leading edge glasses, ceramics and composites. The contributions during this quantity might be of curiosity to all those people who are fascinated about the improvement capability of business and industry wishes

1. INTRODUCTION In the field of materials science, the sol-gel processing has become one of the most important methods for preparing new functional materials because of the following advantages; (1) it can improve properties of the products to a great extent, (2) it is a unique method to produce new materials with new functionality and (3) it can produce directly shaped materials in the form of bulk, fiber and thin film [1]. In the present review article, several interesting researches on the sol-gel glass science and technology which have currently made in Japan will be first introduced especially in relation to non-linear optical applications.
