The uncorrected errors point further back. They (or most of them) witness to uncorrected errors in the exemplar which the early-eleventh-century scribes allowed to stand and which, by their nature, may give hints about what preceded the exemplar. For instance, if the early-eleventh-century scribes were copying an exemplar of late-ninth-century, Alfredian, times or later, that exemplar might, in turn, have been a copy of an earlier text which had been produced at a time when different habits of orthography and script prevailed.

And we recall how Hrothgar had regarded his reversal of fortune as a typical pattern when he delivered his moralizing 'sermon' after Beowulf's fight against Grendel's mother (1700-84, especially 1769-78a). Now that we have heard this report of the old king's expression of sorrow we assent to his earlier generalization emotionally as well as thoughtfully, because his feelings seem basically natural. For all his timelessness, however, the poet did display a number of specific affinities with the philosophy, morality and images of preAlfredian kingship which would have been difficult to recreate once they had receded into the past.

As regards confusion between a and u the signs are similar. Gerritsen reports seven instances of it peculiar to Beowulf among the contents of the extant manuscript and suggests that especially the two mistakes (one in the work of each scribe) which involve the stem of the word concerned and lack any contextual feature to account for them might well have originated in previous confusion between open-headed a and u:82 the one mis writing is wudu for wadu at 58 la (the same scribe had already correctly written wada at 508b and wado at 546a) and the other is strade for strude at 3073b (the same scribe later copying strude correctly at 3126b).
