Soviet Russia was only a few kilometers away, and we could hear and fully understand the news in both the German and Russian languages on the radio. But we had no way of knowing what was ahead. When I graduated in 1932, I left Vilna and returned to Poland proper. I decided to look for a position near Warsaw in order to continue my studies at Warsaw University. I found a position at the Tarbut cultural pregymnasium in a town called Suwalki, and in 1934, I entered the Institute of Higher Judaic Studies at Warsaw University.

This was a tradition, that the head of a local family when he had enough room, when he had enough service or servants, would invite a student of the yeshiva on Friday night. Everyone, including my family, who was middle-class had a servant, usually a girl from a village whose parents wanted her to work in the city and become more or less urbanized and also to send home money. Some families invited always the same student, to give him a “second home” and since some families had daughters it made life a little more interesting.

So there was always a threat. As Jews we learned then that this has to be accepted as fate. Because this was the rule of God that the Jews as a group should be wandering in exile until this God sends the Messiah. For me, I would say that God especially watches this small group who have taken upon themselves to proclaim the name of the one God, and to wait until the whole world will see, will recognize the oneness of God and the Torah and the role of Israel. I think it will not be completely out of place if I say that I know for sure that a great part of the Jewish population, despite the persecutions and the problems, are still a very optimistic bunch, because many of them, I underline many, really believe with all their heart and all their soul that the Messiah will come.
