It's harder to earn the respect of people who know you. The myth is that small towns in America don't care about their writers and are small minded and intolerant. But here I am, a writer being honored by his hometown. In a sense, you have all helped me with this award. I don't know if I have ever used a literal event that has happened in this town, but what I have used are the intimations and hunches you have given me. 7 A sense of having come full circle, of having momentarily reconciled feelings associated with people and place, time and space, must have hung in the air.
However, while the male lover in "Angels" shares his lover's faith and optimism, Ruth's sense of hope is juxtaposed against Sonny's ominous focus on the lights of the oil derrick, which appear to him "brighter" than the stars. Though the scene overall is more earthbound than the earlier one, it still portrays a transcendent moment in the lives of the characters, which serves as a welcome antidote to the alienation and loneliness that elsewhere permeate the novel. With the next chapter, Ruth grows in strength as her search for the transcendent continues, displaying a generosity, courage, and self-awareness that other characters lack.
